Meet Jerome (on the left, may Dog rest his soul) and an unknown living Bull Terrier (on the right, probably a show dog) who has agreed to stand in as an interestingly posed co-model. I am hoping to make a great Jerome for his owner, who has only a few tiny snapshots of him.

Thanks for the explanation. I had to Google tortillions to be completely in the know. I am probably your most ignorant reader hence the many questions... but I am learning.
I think you should try a painting one of these days. A great big one. Just go grab a chunk of hardboard (it might be called masonite), much cheaper than canvas. Unfortunately no grain though.
